UP ON THE ROOF TOP

It's never usually ideal when your hotel accommodations fall through last minute, especially when you have a flight to catch the next day. Rolling into Los Angeles on a Friday night not long before midnight, i frantically was in search of a place to rest my head before a day of traveling. (especially after an 9 hour drive from Arizona). How does one choose a place to stay when there are millions of options. Luckily our budget narrowed it down, and what we ended up finding was well worth the headache.

We were to tired to think when we entered the "LINE HOTEL". From first glance it looked like any other typical boutique place to stay in downtown L.A. However, the next morning as i smelled my way to some coffee, i was pleasantly surprised.

At first glance, what looked like a green house took me off guard. Intrigued, i continued inside the lush building only to find out that yes this was in fact a green house on the roof of our hotel, but wonderfully, also an eatery. "THE COMMISSARY"  is located in the heart of Los Angeles' Korea town. This urban green house is inspired by local Chef Roy Choi. He is the product of his environment here in Korea town. Choi didn't want to sell out by building his restaurant in more upscale neighborhoods he wanted to stay where his roots first began. The Commissary isn't quite "farm to table" but he did strive to focus his menu's on "vibrancy". Seeking out some local ingredients to help contribute to his dishes,  incorporating diverse flavors from those that influenced him during his adolescence here in Korea town. He pulls technique and taste from across Korean, Mexican and whatever else cultures he's inspired by. While the Commissary's menu incorporates some meat, Roy really wanted to focus on more veggie influenced dishes.

It should also be noted that the Commissary "is a bridge between different socio-economic stratas. Many of us have a heightened ability to sectionalize an eating pattern so elevated that we can choose to eat or not eat certain foods. Especially being selective to only plants, and the populous of humanity that has no access to these foods, especially fruits and vegetables." Choi's hopes are that maybe we can learn from each other as we share these fruits and vegetables across the table.  But most of all his dishes that are celebrating the farms and the streets joined together.

The Commissary is open daily. Monday- Friday 7am- 2:30pm & 5pm-11pm. Weekends- &am-3pm & 5-11pm. Also offering weekend brunch from 9am-3pm. Located:
