CHICAGO'S BEST FARM-TO-TABLE TACO'S
Given it’s “Taco Tuesday” and my last Tuesday here in Chicago, I had to share one of my top favorite places to grab a delicious bite in the whole city. It probably isn’t what you’d expect nor where’d you expect, but believe me when this Arizona girl tells you she’s found the best tacos in all of Chicago.
Who knew a little taco stand at Fullerton Beach would be the best taco’s I’ve had, maybe ever. I mean were not on the beach in Mexico, or even in the South West for that matter. What could Chicago know about good tacos?
Well I was wrong, dead wrong. Chef Brian of FLAT & POINT wanted to try something new and fun and decided to take a ‘leap of faith” when he opened the taco joint just a year ago. Beginning his long time career working at prestigious restaurants such as Tru Restaurant and Michelin star restaurant Spiaggia, Brian wanted to take his primal cooking techniques and try something fun. He wanted to take traditional meat cooking that was centered around open fires and wood pallets and use a Texas style of cooking that would use offset smokers fed by hand, and create some comfort and soul back to his cooking.
Well I sure could taste it. The flavor that was in my wild mushroom, and pork belly taco’s were incredible. Fresh and decadent. The unique flavors alone stuck with me weeks later, so I had to go back for more. This time with questions in hand. I had to know what was in these tacos or better yet, where such ingredients were from. Could someone really be getting this type of flavor and freshness if the ingredients weren’t local or Organic? I mean maybe, but I wouldn’t believe it. Turns out my organic palate was spot on. Luckily Brian and his family were working that day so I was able to get in a few questions while ordering some more tacos.
FLAT & POINT is mostly family run. He partners and sources all of his ingredients from a local farms through Green City Market to bring Chicago farm-to-table barbecue. Every Wednesday and Saturday he walks ½ a block from his home in Chicago to the market grabs his provisions, and literally walks them back to his shop every week. Now that’s Sustainable! A man after my own heart. I was even more in love with those tacos now. Brian’s motto at FLAT & POINT IS : Buy local, buy sustainable, be responsible, make better food.”
The summer isn’t over yet folks get out there and visit Brian and his family at FLAT & POINT. Open evenings during the week and All day on weekends. Show your support for local-responsible food. You won’t be disappointed! Or check them out on Instagram @flatandpoint or on the web at www.flatandpoint.com .
